But as always, talk is cheap; so I went ahead and put a microscope to the unit and here’s what I found out.

What Are You Buying?

For those of you new to the brand, Igenix has been around for some time now. While they’ve been around since 2002, I got to know them back in 2012 when I bought an Igenix microwave (still have it). What you immediately notice with the Igenix IG9902 Portable Air Conditioner is how it maintains the brand’s trademark simplicity and functionality all the way.

The IG9902 Climate Control Unit is a 3 in 1 multifunctional air conditioning unit that heats, cools, purifies and dehumidifiers the immediate environment quite effectively. I say immediate because even with a 9000 BTU cooling capacity, this model only achieves optimum efficiency in smaller to medium sized rooms and offices.

However, the cooling capacity does count for something. The IG9902 is able to reach cooling temperature ranges of between 18 to 32C. While the unit is in the cooling mode, it claims to extract as much as 26.4 litres of water per day. This would be a great dehumidifying feature is they accounted for UK’s annual heatwave. Customer reviews actually place the actual water extraction rate at half that amount.

As for the heating function, it provides 2.1 kW of power with temperature ranges of 7 to 25 degrees. This range may be useful for mild cold seasons, but you might want to pair it with another heating source is it’s one of those blasted winters. However, I was really impressed by the odour dispelling capabilities on the IG9902 Climate Control Unit. You can always rely on good old activated carbon to get the job done.

How Easy Is It to Use?

Here’s where I tend to have a few problems with Igenix. Sure, their design is simple and pretty straightforward enough to understand. Heck, even the control panel is as basic as they come. But for Pete’s sake, somebody really needs to educate Igenix on the real difference between mobile and portable.

First off, if you’re telling me that your machine can suck up over 20 litres of water a day, I would expect more than the 0.8-litre tank Igenix incorporates. Sure, there’s a continuous drain option, but I don’t think everyone has a drainage in every room or is willing to bore holes all over their home.

Of course, you could use a window; but you can be sure that it’s the same window your portability went flying out of. But to be fair, almost all other air conditioners in its class offer similar features.

Apart from that, Igenix made a great effort at making the IG9902 air conditioner as user-friendly as possible. Straight from the get-go, the control panel shows you where all the settings are and displays your actions on a small LED display.

There’s also a remote control to do all that from the comfort of your bed or sofa. The 12-hour timer is also effective and lets you set the time for pre-cooling. Alternatively, you could configure the function to automatic and let the climate control take over.

With safety features like antibacterial water trays, odour filters and thermostatic cutoff, the IG9902 is ideal for families with children and pets.

What Accessories Are Included?

Upon making your purchase, you can expect to find the following items in the box:

Igenix Portable Air Conditioner

Pros

  • 3 in one function that allow it to be ideal for all year round use
  • Average water extraction dehumidification
  • Wide range of temperature variations
  • User friendliness with features that make it great product for families with children and/or pets

Cons

  • At a whopping 21 Kg, Igenix might need a lesson at making their unit slightly more portable
  • Some customers complain about noise although this is indeed very subjective

Anything Else You Should Know?

While the IG9902 9000 BTU climate control unit can be credited with strong performance, it causes an unintended problem. Some customers have claimed that the fan produces a loud whooshing sound that can actually interfere with sleep and conversation. However, not everyone feels this way. If your unit is a bit noisy, you can always turn it off before sleeping or use the timer to have your house or office pre-cooled.

Conclusion

Robust, sturdy, high performance and with all the features you would expect from a high-end air conditioner, the IG9902 9000 BTU 3-in-1 Portable Air Conditioner is indeed the ideal unit for anyone looking for all year round climate control.

However, you may want a lighter, more portable unit if you plan on moving the conditioner into every single room in your house. The jury’s out, and the verdict for the IG9902 climate control unit is that it is more suitable as a permanent conditioner than a take everywhere you go type of AC.
